Frequently asked questions
-
Is CARER therapy or counselling?
No. CARER is a warm, non-clinical companion — somewhere to be heard and to hold difficult feelings. It doesn't diagnose, treat, or assess anyone. When you need a therapist, a clinician, or a crisis service, CARER will point you to the right people.
-
Is my data really private?
Yes — it's the whole point. By default CARER runs on your own device, so your words can stay on your phone. Any backup is end-to-end encrypted so even we can't read it. We never sell your data or train AI on it, and it never reaches your family or the person you care for. Read the full privacy promise →
-
Does it work offline?
Yes. After a one-time download over Wi-Fi, the companion runs on your device — offline. And the urgent-help route works with no signal at all, even before you've signed in.
-
Is it free?
CARER is free while we're in early access — and the core will always be free. Crisis support is free, and always will be. No ads, and we never sell your data.
-
Who is it for?
Anyone looking after a family member or friend — a partner, parent, child, or someone close. Whether you're a sandwich carer, a spouse, a parent of a disabled child, caring for someone with a mental illness, a young adult carer, or someone whose caring has ended. You don't have to call yourself a "carer" to belong here. See who it's built for →
-
Does it track or monitor the person I care for?
No — never. The person you care for is never profiled, tracked, or monitored in CARER. We don't hold their condition, medications, or care as data, and we don't advise on any of it. We'll always point you to the people who can.
-
Do I need a wearable or any special device?
No. CARER is just an app on your phone. No wearables, no sensors, no set-up kit.
-
Are there streaks, reminders, or pressure to keep coming back?
No. There are no streaks, no badges, no day-counters, and no guilt-trip notifications. Success isn't how long you stay — it's whether you felt held enough to put the phone down. Late at night, CARER helps you rest rather than keeping you scrolling.
-
Does CARER score or rate how I'm doing?
No. There's no burnout meter, stress level, mood number, or "how you're doing" gauge anywhere. You're a person under strain, not a patient to be measured.
-
What happens in a crisis?
A calm, one-tap crisis and safeguarding route is on every screen — free, offline, and available before sign-in. It supports four kinds of hard moment (your own safety, breaking point, fear of harm to the person you care for, and harm being done to you), always without judgement, and always pointing you to trained human help. CARER is honest that it isn't a crisis service and can't contact anyone on your behalf. See urgent support →
-
Can I delete everything?
Yes. You can view, edit, export, or permanently delete everything CARER remembers, whenever you like — without losing access to the companion.
-
Will it remember what I told it last time?
Yes — that's one of the best things about it. CARER holds on to what you said, in your own words, so you never have to start over. It offers your words back gently, and it's always something you told it — never a conclusion it drew about you.
-
Can it give me advice about my relative's illness or medication?
No — that's a firm line. CARER doesn't advise on anyone's condition, medication, symptoms, or care. It'll hold how you feel about it, and point you to the clinicians and charities who can help with the rest.
-
I'm not sure I even count as a carer. Is it still for me?
Yes. Many people caring for someone don't think of themselves as "a carer" at all. If you're helping look after someone, CARER is for you.
-
Does it stay with me if the caring ends?
Yes. CARER doesn't disappear when the caring does. It holds the after — the grief, the relief and its guilt, the question of who you are now — and remembers the whole story as something that mattered.
-
Is there an age limit?
The core companion is for ages 18 and over. If you're a young carer under 18, CARER will point you to dedicated young-carer services built for you. See support for young carers →
